The coast of Cilento in the southern part of the province of Salerno is called the "Green Heart of Campania". Since 1990, the most part of the coast is the national park of Cilento and Vallo di Diano, the second largest in Italy. Cilento is famous for many kilometers of sandy beaches, many of which are marked by the Blue Flag, as well as picturesque rocks, grottoes and bays. It is believed that somewhere here was an island of sirens from the Odyssey, and here the Argonauts sailed for the golden fleece. Tourists are shown the magic caves of Petrosa, whose age is over 35 million years. There are quaint galleries, stairs, arches, waterfalls and even an underground river, along which you can ride a boat. History lovers will be interested in excavations at the site of the prehistoric Neanderthal settlement, the ruins of the ancient Greek city of Elea, the Greek temples of Paestum included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, the defensive towers of the Saracens, the Cartesian monastery in Padua.
